In response to Thomas Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” To some of you this quote will have little validity, but I think the point I will make from it will. The political conventions are over, and the major candidates have been nominated. Promises have been made, and policy positions have been taken. So what does all of this have to do with the quote above from scripture? We put a lot of importance on the presidential campaign. We expect the president to keep their promises. But what does it take to keep those promises? No matter what they say, they can not do it alone. First they need to get everyone who makes up the executive branch on the same page and willing to work hard. Next they need to deal with congress. If the senate and house of representatives are doing their job, they will act according to the will of the people they serve. - not themselves or their party. But the president and the congress working together often doesn’t go smoothly. To get somethings done requires compromise, and the result falls short of the promises made by the president. Then there is the supreme court. The founding fathers made sure there was a branch of the government that would protect and interpret the constitution. Their job is supposed to be keeping the president and congress in check. Sometimes candidates come off as they can do anything. They will be the savior of our nation. The problem is that they need to deal with others to get things done, and also they are not perfect. In Christian terms they are both saint and sinner. They have the capacity to do what is right and what is wrong. We all have the capacity to do what is right and what is wrong. All of us make mistakes. The difference is how we handle those mistakes. Some of us own up to our mistakes and grow as we learn from our mistakes. A true leader does just that. However, most often those we elect to serve us won’t do that. They don’t want to come off as flawed. We are complicit in this response when politicians make a mistake. We want our politicians to be perfect. We place unrealistic expectations on them. Then politicians try to give us what we want. In November we will need to make a choice. The first is to vote, and I hope everyone who is able to will do that. The second is to remember that we will vote for more than the president. I hope in making your choices, you vote for the best candidates and not just because you are registered with a certain party. I hope that you will listen carefully to the candidates as they tell you what they will do and how they handle their limitations as human beings. What we do in November will have an enormous impact on our future. But remember that while we elect leaders to run the government, we are the government. What we do each and every day has an impact on our fellow citizens. The right things we do and the wrong things we do will help determine our future. As you do your part when making your decisions in November, remember that no one person can be our savior.
